Visits etc for 2011/12
Visits and Special Interest Day for 2011/12
******************************************************
The two places that we will be visiting are quite different from each other; the Birmingham Gallery and Art Gallery, and Soho House. The Gallery, which opened in 1885, has superb examples of the applied arts and masterpieces from all over the world, and is renowned for its collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings; Soho House, which was the home of Matthew Boulton, one of Birmingham's most successful industrialists, contains much of the original furniture and portraits as well as a range of items which gives an insight into his life and times and the history of the city.
We will have coffee and biscuits on arrival at the Museum followed by a private guided tour and, and after a lunch break when you will have your free time, we will continue to Soho House for another private tour before returning to Cambridge. Tea is available before our departure.
The coach will leave Wilberforce Road at 08.15 and will return to Cambridge at 16.00 and the cost of the day, which includes coffee and biscuits and the tours is £34.

Dourney Court, "one of the finest Tudor Manor House in England", is a Grade I listed building with outstanding architectural and historical importance, a home which gives a rare insight into the lifestyle of the squirearchy through 550 years. The Palmer family, who still lives there today, has owned it for 45o of those years. We will have our tour of the magnificent Great Hall, family portraits including some by Lely and Knellner, oak and lacquer furniture and we also visit the adjacent C13th church of St. James with Norman font and Tudor tower.
There will be coffee and biscuits on arrival at the garden centre attached to Dourney Court. Lunch is at the Palmer Arms in the village before we continue to Eton College, which is 15 minutes by coach.
Eton [almost] speaks for itself. It was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI to provide free education for 70 poor scholars who then go on to further education at King’s College, Cambridge. From these 70 scholars the school has expanded to about 1,311 boys, and it has educated 19 former British prime Ministers including Pitt the Elder, MacMillan and Douglas-Hume. There will be quite a lot of [easy] walking around the premises.
The coach will leave Wilberforce Road at 08.15 and return from Eton at 16.15. The cost of the day is £43. If you would like to come please download the form from the adjacent page, indicating what you would like for lunch, and send it with your cheque and a stamped addressed envelope to Mrs. Valerie Collis, 185 Huntingdon Road, Cambridge CB3 0DL. Unless you hear otherwise you have a place and I will send a letter nearer the time with final details. If you are unable to come please try and find a substitute as I’m afraid that there can be no refunds unless I have a waiting list.
