FOOD ART and TRAVEL in the 18TH CENTURY
Ian Kelly, award winning biographer, actor and TV food-historian spent a day detailing with lavish illustrations, the travelling experiences of two of the most influencial food writers of the Georgian period - Marie-Antoine Caeme and Giacomo Casanova. Taking us on a journey from Venice to St Petersburg via Paris, London and Rome, this study day attempted to recreate some of the travel experiences of a below-stairs chef and an above-stairs Venetian gambler, with telling insights into why gastronomy became a craze in the 18th C. and what these men's lives tell us about the debates that raged on art, luxury, food and libertinism in the Revolutonary Age.
